Communications Committee, St. Patrick's G.A.A. Club, Ballyragget, Co. Kilkenny.
The year before last we took a weekend away
I can't rightly remember if it was April or May
But I know it was Charleville, myself and a friend
And naturally it was a Super Valu weekend!
Good drinks for the mood
Excellent food
Waistbands need elastic
Shopping fantastic
Memories galore
We'd come back for more
Next thing of we knew
We were going to play you
In croke Park under lights
Both waving whites
Yours with the red
Ours the maroon
All over the moon
Ye from the Lee, us from the Nore
Of ye we felt there were so many more
A much bigger county, a very fine town
Though we filled seven buses our numbers were down
Come on The Bally we shouted but still
We couldn't be heard oer the roar CHARLEVILLE
What a match, what a thrill, what a hurling display
It could have been either team on the day
And the very best thing there was never foul play
So after it all it emerged we're the winner
But we heard from the lads ye met at the dinner
Ye were really fine people, ye sang them a song
Big hearted strong men, though your journey was long
That night in Ballyragget over and over twas said
That ye were the finest team we ever played
And we never know what the future could bring
We could all be back in The Croker next Spring!

Ballyragget bag title after titanic Charleville tussle
St Patrick's 1-13 Charleville 1-12
A magnificent contest between two outstanding teams, a game to grace any venue and any occasion as an ultra-talented St Patrick’s of Ballyragget overcame the powerful challenge of Cork champions Charleville in this All-Ireland club JHC final in Croke Park on Saturday evening.
"Maybe we’ve played better," said delighted St Patrick’s manager Maurice Aylward, a man who led his native Ballyhale Shamrocks to All-Ireland glory at senior level. "But we haven’t played better opposition. That was a very good Charleville team; they were hurlers, they were strong, they had ball-winners and they knew what to do with the ball when they won it. They did everything we expected and we did everything we could to try to stop them. In the end it was just enough. It must have been a terrific game to watch with great hurling and great scores. A typical Kilkenny Cork game."
And indeed it was terrific to watch with two fit and skilful sides, utterly committed and giving their all without a foul stroke pulled.
St Patrick’s had the better start as Charleville, like so many times in this campaign, were left standing at the starting-gate. The Kilkenny champions led (0-4 to 0-0) after 13 minutes with the lively Joseph Brennan landing two points while half-forwards Kevin Kelly and Seoirse Kenny had one apiece. Eventually, driven on by the O’Flynn brothers (Colm at centre-back, captain Daniel in midfield) along with Alan O’Connor, Charleville clicked into gear. Now it was their turn to dominate and four points — two from flying corner-forward Andrew Cagney — had them on level by the 21st minute. Bill Staunton and Cagney exchanged points to leave them deadlocked at the break on five points apiece.
On the restart, again it was St Patrick’s storming into the lead with two points from the increasingly influential Staunton — now at centre-forward — and one from midfielder and captain Brian Phelan. Again Charleville looked like they were going to be playing second-fiddle.
Again, however, they came back with points from youngster Cagney and the veteran Mervyn Gammell who played his first championship game for Charleville in 1994, the year Andrew was born, steadying the ship. Even when Seoirse Kenny goaled for St Pat’s, a kicked finish from close range in the 42nd minute, Charleville didn’t panic. They hit back with three points in two minutes, including one apiece from Daniel O’Flynn and James Casey.
St Patrick’s then went into the ascendancy once more and in the 55th minute they were four points to the good (1-12 to 0-11) and were looking the more likely winners. And again Charleville came back, O’Connor grabbing a high centre on the edge of the square, parting to the in-rushing Gammell for goal. In the 59th minute wing-back Brendan Dennehy benefited from the break of his own sideline ball and pointed from distance to tie them up for the final time in the game (1-12 apiece) heading into the final minute. It was in that fateful minute, however, that this game was won with Staunton winning the puckout and pointing from distance. "A super result, it means everything to me," said Aylward. "I think this is every bit as good as Ballyhale, because Ballyhale were expected to win. You had superstars on that team — this was just an ordinary hurling team, no great superstars, but some terrific hurlers. It’s unbelievable what this is going to do for Ballyragget."

Charleville captain eyeing All-Ireland success

Charleville captain Daniel O'Flynn is setting his sights on 2012 already after his side's Munster club junior hurling championship success yesterday.
The Cork champions saw off the challenge of Limerick counterparts Cappamore in Mallow by 3-15 to 2-8 to earn themselves an early Christmas present in the form of a provincial title and an All-Ireland semi-final place to savour.
However, O'Flynn said it was by no means a straightforward win and believes that he and his team mates will need to improve if they are to reach the final in two months' time.
"That was a tough game," O'Flynn told the Irish Examiner. "They came at us hell-for-leather for the first 10 minutes of the second half, I thought we were in serious trouble. We had actually managed to start well today, for a change, but left them back into it but as usual though we finished strongly.
"It's great, it's given the whole town a buzz. Christmas was looking like it was going to be hard for a lot of people but this makes it a little easier. For such a small pocket, the success that ourselves and Effin have had this year, Newtown over the last few years, Kilfinane and Ardpatrick two years ago - it must be something in the waters around here! Please God now ourselves and Effin can have a date in Croke Park in February. That would be a huge boost to the whole area."

CHARLEVILLE 3-15 CAPPAMORE 2-8

Charleville re wrote the Clubs History Books again yesterday in Mallow when they were crowned Munster Junior Hurling Champions for the first time in their History. They overcame a very strong Cappomore side from Limerick on a final scoreline of 3-15 to 2-8.A 15 min spell in the Second half were Charleville upped their performance and surged ahead to a comfortable win. The final scoreline, does scant justice to the efforts of the Cappamore side ,As with only 13 minutes to go there were just two points between the teams, Charleville ahead 1-9 to 1-7, the Cork side’s young attackers — James O’Brien, Andrew Cagney, Derry Murphy and Mark Kavanagh — all to the fore.
From the outset this was an extremely tight and tough contest with the sides trading early points before James O’Brien rounded Cappamore and coolly slotted home from a narrow angle, putting his side 1-3 to 0-2 ahead after 12 minutes.
Points from wing-back Brendan Dennehy and midfielder Daniel O’Flynn extended the Charleville lead and it looked ominous for Cappamore. A superb overhead pass from The Cappamore full-forward sent a bullet of a volley to thr net from point-blank range and the Limerick champions were back in the game. Four points on the trot and suddenly they were tied, 1-6 apiece.
An injury-time James O’Brien pointed free was all that separated the sides at the break, Charleville with their noses in front, for the first time in a final this year but this one had all the makings of a Classic .
Three minutes after the restart it was tied again, the Cappamore midfielder with a fine point and for the next ten minutes, as the lights came on, it was stalemate.
Who would have thought, at that stage, it would end as it did? Cappamore, however, were finding the going increasingly tough against a Charleville defence that simply shut up shop. Cyrian Curtin was assured, Michael O’Flynn, Conor Fitzgerald and Alan Dennehy combined superbly in the full-back line, centre-back Colm O’Flynn gave a man of the match performance but was ably supported by Barry McCarthy and Brendan Dennehy. In midfield James Casey and captain fantastic Daniel O’Flynn were increasingly dominant, while the move of the experienced Mervyn Gammell from full-forward to the wing meant an added ball-winner in that vital area, alongside another veteran, Alan O’Connor.
Ultimately, however, it was the pace, fitness, energy and of the Charleville youngsters up front that made the difference for Charleville. Andrew Cagney and Derry Murphy got the goals that mattered most. sub Mark Kavanagh had a hat-trick of points, and despite A late goal for Cappamore, ended the scoring
The final whistle was greeted with scenes of Jubilation from the Charleville Supporters and completed a remarkable end to 2011 for the Charleville Club.It was the fourth piece of silverware that has ended up in the Club this year . Christmas has arrived early in Charleville this year and will be celebrated in style.
Scorers for Charleville: J O’Brien 1-5 (1f), D Murphy 1-1, A Cagney 1-1, M Kavanagh 0-3, B Dennehy (1f), D O’Flynn 0-2 each, M Gammell 0-1.
CHARLEVILLE: C Curtin; M O’Flynn, C Fitzgerald, A Dennehy; B McCarthy, C O’Flynn, B Dennehy; J Casey, D O’Flynn (c); D Murphy, G Kelleher, A O’Connor; A Cagney, M Gammell, J O’Brien.
Subs: M Kavanagh for Kelleher (41), PJ O’Halloran for Gammell (58), D O’Sullivan for M O’Flynn (58), F O’Callaghan for Cagney (58), J Foley for D O’Flynn (58). |
